Dr Katrina Morgan 

Katrina is a member of the ORC's Athena SWAN self-assessment team (SAT), who recently received the Bronze award, where she leads a working group on recruitment. 

Katrina held the role of Chair and Deputy Chair of the university wide Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (WiSET) committee in 2017/18 abd 2016/17, respectively, and is still an active member to date. As Chair of WiSET, Katrina also sat on the University Athena SWAN committee and the Staff Diversity Network committee in 2017/18. 

During her PhD, Katrina was a member of the Electronic and Computer Science (ECS) departments Athena SWAN committee in 2014-2016 and set up and led a Lean-In mentoring circle in 2014-2015. Katrina also held the role of the Nano Research Group's PhD representative on the graduate school committee in 2012-2013.  

Katrina joined the ORC at the University of Southampton as a Research Fellow in 2016 after obtaining a CASE Award PhD in the electronics and computer science department, in the area of radiation effects and reliability of dielectrics in CMOS transistors and resistive memories. Continuing in the field of thin films and nanofabrication, Katrina’s current work is based upon advanced chalcogenide 2D and thin films for a wide variety of opto and electronic applications. Katrina's research in wearable and flexible thermoelectric generators led to securing £4 million in a H2020 grant, Smart2Go. She is also principal and co-investigator in 3 funds totalling £55k. Previous to her time at Southampton, Katrina received her MPhys in Physics from the University of Sussex in 2011. 

Katrina has presented her research in Westminster on numerous occasions. In 2016, she was selected to present her research at the Houses of Parliament at SET for Britain. In 2017 Katrina was invited to represent The Royal Society at the Voice of the Future in Parliament and later that year was also selected to take part in The Royal Society Pairing Scheme in Westminster, where she was paired with a senior civil servant at the Ministry of Defence and debated with Members of Parliament on how science is used to influence policy.

Research

Research interests

Katrina's research is in thin film deposition of advanced materials for next generation optoelectronics. Katrina leads the development, optimisation and characterisation of custom chalcogenides films, supplying them to 8 academic and 11 industrial partners across 4 UKRI funded projects, enabling the material’s unique properties to be employed in devices such as photonic crystals, photodetectors, biosensors, waveguides and fibre optics. Simultaneously, Katrina employ chalcogenides’ superior electronic properties for resistive memory and flexible thermoelectric generators.

Teaching

Katrina has supervised a PhD student to completion and supervised 1MSc student, conducts lab sessions, runs her reserach group's weekly science meetings, is a trained mentor for undergraduate and post graduate students and manages a laboratory. She founded and led an outreach team, winning an Impact Award and led Southampton city's largest International Women's Day event. Katrina also has taken part in the 2016, 2017 and 2019 Science and Engineering Festivals at the University of Southampton, teaching the general public about the research that the university conducts.
